Anwar Signals Green Light for Tengku Zafrul to Join PKR
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that talks are under way for Tengku Zafrul Aziz to join the party.
(FMT) – The PKR president says the party does not invite people to join it, but is ‘open’ to such discussions.
Speaking to reporters after attending PKR’s special congress here today, Anwar said only “preliminary discussions” have taken place.
“In our culture, we don’t invite people (to join PKR) but we are always ready to discuss, and the party is open (for such discussions),” he said.
Asked if Tengku Zafrul, an Umno Supreme Council member, was keen to join PKR, he said the question should be directed towards the investment, trade and industry minister.
“In principle, we (PKR) take an open stance (on such matters),” he said.
“PKR has always been open. Some of our leaders were once with Amanah or DAP before joining us. Similarly, others have moved to and from these parties,” he said.
Anwar added that PKR has maintained good relationships with such parties and it has made the transitions smooth.
Speculation has been rife that Tengku Zafrul is planning to leave Umno to join PKR in an apparent bid to become the next Selangor menteri besar.
However, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Tengku Zafrul has not informed him of any plans to leave, while PKR denied receiving a formal application from him.
Tengku Zafrul is expected to address the matter in a statement later today.
